Technical Notes on QX-Tools 2.0
General
Microtek Scanners
Microtek scanners may interfere with the built-in electronic registration process. If you are using a Microtek scanner, please turn it off before attempting to register QX-Tools. You may turn the scanner back on once the registration process is complete.
Kaboom 3.0
Kaboom 3.0 is incompatible with QX-Tools 2.0. We recommend you disable Kaboom before using QX-Tools. A future version of Kaboom may be compatible.
QX-Bars
You can now use Command+Tab (and Command+Shift+Tab) to cycle through tools on the QX-Bars standard left toolbar. This also works if you are displaying a QX-Bar that contains any of the QuarkXPress tool buttons. The order in which tools are selected is the order in which they appear in the toolbar. This means that if you don't like the order that QuarkXPress uses, you can simply move buttons around on the QX-Bar to change it. Also, if there are tools that you never use, you can simply remove the buttons and they will never be selected.
QX-Bars allows you to double click on the following QuarkXPress tools to bring up their Preference settings:
Text Box, both Picture Box Tools, Polygon Tool, Orthogonal Line Tool, and the Line Tool.
Buttons for Custom Tools
Up to 10 custom tools can be added to the Quark tool palette by 3rd-party XTensions. In fact, QX-Print & QX-Scaler add their own custom tools to the tool palette so you can select an area to save as an EPS or dynamically scale a selection. Other XTensions that add tools include products like Stars & Stripes. These custom tools, however, do not automatically display in QX-Bars.
Buttons for these custom tools can be found in the Custom Tools category in the Customize QX-Bars dialog. The category contains buttons for all 10 custom tools. Each button corresponds to a custom tool, from Custom Tool 1 through Custom Tool 10, in the order that the tool's XTension is loaded. You can edit the buttons to give them the proper titles and icons.
To use the buttons open the Customize QX-Bars dialog, select the Custom Tools category and drag one or more of the Custom Tool buttons to a toolbar. Close the dialog and then click on the Custom Tool buttons to see which custom tools they correspond to. If you wish to edit the title or icon of a button, you may do so by control-command-double clicking on the button. A dialog is displayed which allows you to change its title and icon.
Note: Which Custom Tool Button is assigned to which XTension depends upon the order the XTensions are loaded. This means Tool 1 corresponds to the first XTension that adds a tool. Obviously if you change the XTensions load order, or enable/disable an XTension in QX-Manager, another tool may be installed first and Custom Button 1 will now correspond to it. You can fix this by simply re-editing it as described above.
QX-Effects
The "X" that appears in empty picture boxes will appear in bevel and emboss effects created by QX-Effects. To remove this "X", either use a text box, or import a blank TIFF file into the picture box. (Note: QX-Filters has a filter that allows it to "acquire" a blank tiff). Another method is to change the runaround (Item->Runaround...) to "Manual Image."
Using the 1-bit dither option on Shadows and Glows will produce effects that can be placed over pictures and colored backgrounds without the need for "burning." They work best at resolutions of 400 to 600 dpi. This will not produce an excessively large file, because the image is only 1-bit deep.
QX-FindChange
You need to enter values in "units" (units are the current default measurement, such as picas, points or inches) when using FindChange.
If you want to restart your search from the beginning of your document, hold down the Option Key. The Find Next button will change to Find First. This action will take you to the beginning of your document and begin your search.
QX-FineTune
You need to enter values in "units" (units are the current default measurement, such as picas, points or inches) when using FindTune.
QX-CopyStyles
QX-CopyStyles will pick-up and apply different settings depending on the state of your cursor and selection. If you have an insertion point in your text, CopyStyle will pick-up and apply Paragraph attributes. If you have text highlighted, CopyStyle will pick-up and apply Character attributes.
QX-Filters
If you are going to use QX-Filters to run third party Photoshop plug-in filters (such as Extensis Intellihance™), it is recommended that you increase the RAM allocation of QuarkXPress by at least one megabyte.
If you wish to run Photoshop plug-in filters on rather large images (i.e. 2 MB or larger), for best performance it is recommended that you apply the filters within Photoshop instead of using QX-Filters in QuarkXPress.
If Adobe Photoshop is installed on your Mac, it is recommended that you move the Extensis Filters folder from the XTension folder to the Photoshop Plug-ins folder, so that all of the Photoshop plug-in filters are located in one place.
Gallery Effects does not support CMYK images. If you attempt to run Gallery Effects on a CMYK image in QuarkXPress using QX-Filters, you may get unpredictable results.
Photoshop plug-ins which require Photoshop to run, are not displayed on the QX-Filters list. If you wish to run these filters, you must do so within Photoshop.
QX-Scaler
QX-Scaler allows you to directly type Quark supported measurements (inches, pts, etc.) into its measurement fields. QX-Scaler will convert the measurement to your current measurement setting.
QX-Styles
If you attempt to apply a character style which contains a custom color that is missing from the current document, QX-Styles will use the color black. This is only a temporary override — the custom color defined in the character style will not be permanently changed to black.
